PDP Suspends Kogi State Ward Congress Amid Looting of Electoral Materials

PDP Suspends Kogi State Ward Congress Amidst Electoral Material Theft

The Senator Danjuma Laah-led Kogi State Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended the state ward congress, which was earlier scheduled for Saturday. The decision to suspend the congress was made necessary due to the invasion of the state secretariat by hoodlums, who made away with sensitive electoral materials.

According to a statement issued by the Publicity Secretary of the committee, Dayo Akande, on Sunday, the decision was taken in collaboration with the congress committee chairman, Boyelayefa Debeleme. The statement revealed that the impersonators, who came with an 18-seater bus and other vehicles without any means of identification, stole all sensitive materials meant for the congress across the 239 wards of the 21 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

The committee condemned the act and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as other institutions to disregard any purported result that might emanate from the illegal exercise. The PDP committee emphasized that the incident was a clear attempt to undermine the electoral process and undermine the party’s efforts to hold a free and fair congress.

The committee’s decision to suspend the ward congress is a significant development in the run-up to the party’s national convention, which is expected to take place in the coming weeks. The suspension is likely to raise concerns about the credibility of the party’s internal elections and the ability of the PDP to hold a successful national convention.
