Kenya Court Orders Extradition of US Murder Suspect

Man Accused of Murdering Kenyan Girlfriend to Face Trial in US

A Kenyan court has ordered the extradition of Kevin Kang’ethe, a man accused of murdering his girlfriend, nurse Margaret Mbitu, in the United States. Kang’ethe will stand trial in Massachusetts on charges of first-degree murder.

Mbitu’s body was found with multiple stab wounds in Kang’ethe’s SUV in a garage at Boston’s Logan Airport in November 2023. Two days prior, her family reported her missing. Investigations revealed that Kang’ethe had boarded a flight from Logan to Kenya the day before Mbitu’s body was discovered.

Kang’ethe was tracked down in Kenya three months after the murder and arrested, but he escaped in a mini-van just one week into his detention. Kenyan police launched a manhunt and investigation, eventually re-arresting him at a relative’s home in Nairobi.

The authorities also arrested four police officers, two of Kang’ethe’s relatives, and a lawyer accused of assisting in the prison break. During his initial arrest, Kang’ethe was found in possession of Mbitu’s belongings, including her driver’s license, Bank of America debit card, and a visa card.

This chilling case highlights the complex and often heartbreaking consequences of murder. As the story unfolds, it is crucial that we keep the focus on the victims, like Mbitu, and their families, who are left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
