Zamfara State: APC and PDP Engage in Squabble Over Alleged Attempt to Burn Defence Minister’s Residence

Tensions are running high in Zamfara State as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have become embroiled in a heated squabble over an alleged attempt to burn the residence of the Minister of Defence (state), Bello Mattawalle.

According to reports, the APC Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Yusuf Idris, accused the state’s PDP chapter of trying to use its supporters to attack the Minister of Defence and other stakeholders of the APC during the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest.

Idris claimed that the PDP officials had wanted to hijack the peaceful protest to destroy the property of prominent APC leaders in the state, but for the quick intervention of security personnel. He alleged that the PDP thugs had strategically deployed to attack, maim, and destroy personalities and properties of the APC.

The APC official also accused the PDP of attempting to destroy the personal residence of former governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle, as well as the residence of APC Senator representing Zamfara North senatorial zone, Alhaji Sahabi Ya’u, and damaging his Toyota Hilux.

In a sharp reaction, the state’s acting PDP chairman, Muktar Lugga, described the allegation as baseless. He stressed that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal would never plan to attack anybody or cause confusion in the state, and advised the APC to stop politicking and focus on supporting President Baloa Tinubu to address the issues at the right time.

Lugga also advised PDP members to stop telling the world that the house of the Defence Minister was about to be attacked if not for the quick intervention of the security personnel, describing it as shameful and exposing the Minister’s unpopularity in his home state.

The squabble between the two parties has raised concerns about the ability of the state government to maintain law and order, and the potential for further violence and instability in the region.
