Violence Erupts in Nigerian Protests Against Economic Hardship
The Nigerian Police Force has released an update on the nationwide protests against economic hardship, which began on August 1st, 2024. The update reveals a grim picture of violence and destruction, with seven deaths recorded so far and nine police officers injured.
The Police have dismissed a report by Amnesty International that 13 individuals have lost their lives in the protests, stating that the actual number of fatalities is seven. The update also reveals that 681 individuals have been arrested for committing various criminal offenses, with two AK-47 rifles and assorted live ammunition recovered from protesters.
The Police warned that the ongoing protest has turned violent and advised law-abiding citizens to immediately withdraw from the protest. According to the statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, the violence was orchestrated by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP elements who infiltrated the crowd and detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Borno State, resulting in the deaths of four individuals and severe injuries to 34 others.
Additionally, an unregistered Honda Prelude car ran into the protesters in the same state, resulting in the deaths of two civilians. In Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State, a group of individuals mobilized to loot a shop, leading to a local vigilante man killing one of the looters.
The police spokesman also reported incidents of armed robbery, arson, mischief, looting of public institutions and private businesses, and destructions of both public and private property during the protest. Arrests were made and recoveries were made from the suspects while the protest was ongoing.
The situation highlights the growing tensions in Nigeria as citizens demand change amidst economic hardship. The Nigerian government must take immediate action to address the root causes of the protests and restore peace to the country.
