The member representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Wole Oke, alleged on Friday that suspected political thugs attacked his supporters in the Government Reserve Area (GRA) of Osogbo, Osun State. In a statement he personally signed and obtained in Osogbo, Oke said the assault occurred shortly after some northerners living within his constituency visited him and pledged their support for his reelection.
According to the statement, about 15 people suffered machete cuts and other injuries and were rushed to a hospital in Osogbo for treatment. Oke further claimed that one of the perpetrators who was apprehended has been handed over to the police for further investigation. The statement read in part: “Some Hausa residents that came from Obokun Local Government to declare their loyalty to me in my house located at the GRA Area of Osogbo were on Friday attacked, inflicted with machete cuts, beaten with clubs and other dangerous weapons by suspected political thugs. About 15 of them were seriously wounded. They were later rushed to a hospital in Osogbo where they are currently receiving treatment. One of the hoodlums who was apprehended declared that they were being sponsored by an Osogbo‑based politician. The matter has been reported at the State Police Command.”
Efforts to reach the State Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, for comment proved futile; calls did not go through to her line and she has not responded to a message sent to her on the matter as of the time of filing this report.
