England Appoints Lee Carsley as Interim Manager Ahead of Nations League Campaign

In a surprise move, the English Football Association (FA) has appointed Lee Carsley as the interim manager of the England national team for the start of the Nations League campaign in September. Carsley takes the reins from Gareth Southgate, who recently resigned after eight years in charge following England’s loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

Carsley, a well-known figure in English football, will lead the team in their September matches away to the Republic of Ireland and at home to Finland. The 47-year-old is no stranger to the England set-up, having worked as an assistant coach under Southgate since 2019.

"I’m honored to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis," Carsley said in a statement after his appointment. "I’m very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, and I’m excited to get started."

Southgate’s resignation brings an end to his eight-year tenure, which included a World Cup semifinal appearance in 2018 and a penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final. Carsley’s task will be to guide the team through the Nations League and potentially set the stage for a new head coach to take over ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

With his extensive experience in the England setup, Carsley is well-placed to navigate the team through the upcoming matches. Fans will be eagerly awaiting his first game in charge, which promises to be an exciting period for English football.
