University of Benin Bans Hot Plates, Ring Boilers, and Gas Cookers to Cut Energy Expenditures

The University of Benin has prohibited the use of hot plates, ring boilers, and gas cookers in its hostels to reduce increasing energy-related expenditures. According to a circular signed by the Registrar, Ademola Bobola, any student found violating this order will be rusticated from the school.

The decision comes amidst an electricity crisis that hit the university recently. The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) raised the monthly billing of the institution to N250 million from N88 million, leading to the disconnection of the two campuses by the BEDC authorities.

The electricity crisis led to a protest by students on July 3, after weeks of power outage and supply of electricity from generating sets. The protest forced the Senate of the university to close it down to forestall breakdown of law and order.

In a circular announcing the university’s reopening on Monday, Bobola emphasized the need for students to abide by the management’s emplaced arrangements for the supply, distribution, and utilization of electricity on its campuses. Students are required to pay up their outstanding levies with evidence of payment, as any student without evidence of payment will not be allowed into the exam halls.

Furthermore, students are expected to maintain good conduct, avoiding any unruly conduct that is against the rules and regulations of the university. Bobola emphasized that students should not sponsor or participate in any unauthorized assembly or demonstration within the precincts of the university.

This development is a significant step towards reducing energy expenditures and ensuring the smooth operation of the university’s facilities.
