Olusegun Agbaje, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lagos State, dismissed the call for his resignation by Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar as a waste of time. Atiku, speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications, Phrank Shaibu, alleged that Agbaje was trying to compromise the elections by planning to involve the Lagos State Park and Garage Management Committee, led by Musiliu Akinsanya (also known as MC Oluomo), in the movement of sensitive electoral materials.

Agbaje refuted the allegation, stating that the commission had no agreement with Oluomo and that he had never met him. “Whoever is saying that should come out and tell us more about it,” he told our correspondent in an interview on Thursday. He added that calls for his resignation were merely distractions, emphasizing his accountability to the INEC chairman and the committee in Abuja.

Regarding logistics, Agbaje explained that electoral officers at the local government level are responsible for securing vehicles. “That has been my pattern since I joined the commission because I want to know who to hold responsible if they don’t commence elections by 8:30 am,” he said. He noted that the officers have already obtained the vehicles and are close to completing the arrangements. Soon, the Federal Road Safety Corps will be invited to inspect the vehicles. Agbaje also urged political parties to propose any better arrangements they might have, stating that all parties have been informed of the current plan.
