Nigerian Organization Condemns Calls for Military Coup Amid Hunger Protests
Afenifere, a prominent pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and socio-political organization, has strongly condemned the growing calls for a military coup in Nigeria. The organization’s denunciation comes on the heels of a recent hunger protest, where some participants demanded military rule in the country.
According to reports, the protesters, who were flying Russian flags, agitated for military rule, sparking concerns about the stability of Nigeria’s democratic system. In response, Afenifere issued a statement through its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, asserting that the country’s democratic dispensation should not be sacrificed or truncated for any reason.
While acknowledging that democracy may not yet provide the best outcomes, Afenifere emphasized that it is still the best system in the current situation due to its inherent characteristics, such as making the people the custodians of political mandate and allowing various tendencies to operate within the law.
The organization’s spokesman further urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to be vigilant and cautious, as some individuals may be using the protests to advance personal interests. Notably, reports suggest that N4 billion was raised as donations for the protests.
Afenifere’s stance is a clear reminder of the importance of democratic governance and the need for citizens to protect and defend it.
