Kwara State Governments’ Crackdown on Environmental Offenders Intensifies
The Kwara State Government has ramped up its efforts to combat environmental law offenders, imposing harsher penalties and increasing its 24-hour enforcement drive to keep the state capital, Ilorin, clean and free of infectious diseases.
According to reports, the fine imposed on offenders has risen to a staggering N50,000, while they are also liable to a three-month jail sentence instead of a fine. The previous fines, handed out to 21 offenders on Thursday, ranged from N20,000 to N10,000.
The state government’s determination to curb environmental lawbreakers is evident in the 300-man enforcement team, led by the Commissioner for Environment, who are working tirelessly around the clock to ensure adherence to the new law. Even at midnight, members of the team are out in force, arresting offenders and taking them to the mobile court for trial.
Despite the government’s efforts, reports suggest that some residents are still using unauthorized locations, including medians, as dumping grounds for refuse. This defiant behavior has led to a spike in the number of offenders being sentenced, with over 40 persons already convicted since the enforcement drive commenced.
The Kwara State Government’s campaign to keep Ilorin clean and healthy is a welcome initiative, and it remains to be seen whether the increased penalties and enforcement will have the desired effect. One thing is certain, however – the government is committed to holding offenders accountable for their actions and creating a cleaner, safer environment for its citizens.
