Apple Expected to Launch Fourth-Generation AirPods This Year, Report Claims
Apple is reportedly gearing up to launch its fourth-generation AirPods model this year, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The tech giant is expected to phase out its AirPods (2nd Generation) TWS headset and release the AirPods (4th Generation) in two variants globally.
The new AirPods (4th Generation) models will allegedly replace the AirPods (2nd Generation) and AirPods (3rd Generation) models, which were launched in 2021. The first model will be an entry-level variant that will lack active noise cancellation (ANC), while the second model will feature ANC and is expected to be more expensive.
Both new AirPods models will have the same design, with the only difference being the presence or absence of ANC. It is unclear whether Apple will continue to use the open back design for its upcoming devices, including the more expensive model.
The AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) will reportedly continue to be available as the top-tier ANC offering, with features like Adaptive Audio, better active noise cancellation, and Transparency mode. Apple may also update the AirPods Pro at a later date, potentially adding features like Apple Intelligence to compete with Google’s Pixel Buds Pro 2.
Another update expected in the new AirPods (4th Generation) models is the transition to a USB Type-C port, which is already available on the AirPods Pro (2nd Generation). This change is expected to comply with regulations in various regions, including the EU. It is unclear whether the new AirPods models will support MagSafe charging.
An earlier report also suggested that Apple is working on an updated model of the first-generation AirPods Max, which could feature a USB Type-C port and support for wired audio playback, enabling lossless audio playback on Apple Music. However, there is no word on whether this model will launch in September.
The rumored AirPods (4th Generation) models are expected to arrive later this year, with the price of the third-generation AirPods (open ear model) potentially dropping from its current price of Rs. 20,900 in India.
