Kenyan Police Officers on Bond After Allegedly Helping 13 Suspects Escape
A dramatic turn of events has unfolded in Kenya as five police officers arrested for allegedly assisting in the escape of 13 suspects have been released on a personal bond. The officers were taken into custody following an investigation into the escape, which has raised concerns about police accountability in the country.
According to reports, the prosecution had requested that the Milimani Court hold the officers for 14 days to complete the probe. However, the court granted the officers a personal bond, with the condition that they report to the investigating officer twice a week until the inquiry is completed.
The suspects are among the 13 individuals who allegedly escaped from custody, with the acting inspector general of police announcing disciplinary measures against eight officers, including the area and station commanders, as well as those on duty at the time of the incident.
The escape of the suspected serial killer, Jumaisi Khalusha, has particularly worried Kenyans. Khalusha has confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, although he later claimed he was forced to make the confession by the police. DNA tests have identified six of the victims, with several body parts remaining unidentified.
The man was being detained at the Girigiri police station when he allegedly escaped from custody. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has offered a cash reward for information leading to the suspect’s recapture.
