Mariah Carey Mourns the Loss of Mother and Sister on Same Day
American music superstar Mariah Carey is reeling from the devastating loss of her mother and sister, who passed away on the same day. The singer shared the heartbreaking news on Monday, expressing profound sadness over the sudden loss of her loved ones.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah stated. She also thanked fans for their love and support, and asked for respect for her privacy during this difficult time.
The causes of death for Patricia, 87, and Alison, 63, remain undisclosed. However, Alison’s close friend and carer, Dave Baker, revealed that she had been under home hospice care in her final weeks, struggling with health issues including problems with her internal organs.
In a heartfelt statement, Baker remembered Alison as “a highly intelligent, warm, and sensitive person” who had been his friend and carer for nine years. He will “miss her greatly” and hopes that she has found peace.
Mariah’s relationship with her mother, Patricia, has been complex and publicly documented. Patricia was a former opera singer and vocal coach, trained at Juilliard in New York City. She was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey, who passed away in 2002, and the couple divorced when Mariah was just three years old.
In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the pop legend opened up about the complicated dynamics with her mother. Mariah wrote that their relationship has been “a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” but emphasized that their bond remains strong.
As the music world comes together to support Mariah through this difficult time, fans around the globe are sending their condolences to the singer.
