Traditional Rulers Welcome Local Govt Autonomy

Traditional Ruler Hails Local Government Autonomy as Lifeline for Traditional Institutions

In a significant development, the traditional ruler of the Jukun kingdom in Taraba State, Ishaku Adda Ali, has expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for granting autonomy to local government councils. Ali, who is also the Chairman of the Taraba State Council of Traditional Rulers, believes that this move will liberate traditional rulers across the country from being relegated to the background.

Speaking during a meeting with the advisory committee on local government autonomy, Ali praised the decision, saying it will restore dignity and authority to traditional institutions. He noted that local government councils had previously overshadowed traditional institutions, and the autonomy will enable traditional rulers to fulfill their roles within their communities without interference.

The monarch also commended the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for establishing the committee, which he said will ensure that policies, programs, and decisions made at the local level reflect the unique challenges and opportunities faced by each community. Ali emphasized the importance of synergy between traditional institutions and local governments to maintain social cohesion and uphold the rule of law.

The traditional ruler also highlighted the crucial role of traditional institutions in maintaining the security of citizens’ lives and property, emphasizing the need for cooperation with local governments to checkmate the activities of criminal-minded individuals.

The autonomy decision, according to Ali, marks a significant step forward in ensuring that traditional rulers can effectively fulfill their roles within their communities. He assured the committee of the unflinching commitment of monarchs across the state to contribute positively to the committee’s success.

With this move, traditional rulers across the country can look forward to a brighter future, free from the constraints of local government interference. The autonomy decision is a testament to the importance of preserving traditional institutions and ensuring their effective participation in community development.
