Venice Film Festival Explores the Roots of War in Diverse Offerings
The Venice Film Festival this year delves into the complex and often painful subjects of war, peace, and conflict. Amid the festival’s artistic offerings are documentaries and features that bring the harsh realities of war to the screen in thought-provoking ways. From behind-the-lines views of Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine to poignant tales of ordinary people caught up in the chaos, these films offer a multifaceted exploration of the human experience in times of conflict.
One of the festival’s most striking offerings is a documentary titled “Russians at War”, made by Russian-Canadian filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova. Trofimova embedded with a Russian battalion in Ukraine’s eastern region, capturing the candid voices and emotions of the soldiers as they struggle to make sense of their missions.
“It’s so confusing here, I don’t even know what we’re fighting for,” says one young soldier, echoing sentiments shared by his comrades.
According to Trofimova, the soldiers she lived with for seven months were “absolutely ordinary guys” who refuted the notion that all Russian soldiers are war criminals in Western media.
