Australian Breakdancer Raygun Defends Olympic Performance Amidst Backlash
In her first interview since her viral Olympic performance, Australian breakdancer Rachael "Raygun" Gunn has spoken out about the criticism she faced and defended her moves. Appearing on Australian talk show The Project, Raygun acknowledged that she’s had a tough time since her Olympic debut, but insisted that her critics just don’t know much about breakdancing.
Raygun, a 37-year-old university lecturer, became the subject of global criticism after losing every round of her Olympic breakdancing battles with moves that were widely considered laughably embarrassing. Despite this, she remains confident in her abilities and believes that her "record speaks to that."
"I think even if it went to the second or third [place winners], that it still would have been a white girl representing [Australia]," Raygun said, referencing the diversity of breakdancing approaches. "It’s just a different approach in breaking. You have the athletics style breakers, you also have the more artistic style breakers, and all of them are very valid."
Raygun also addressed rumors that she was selected for the Australian team through underhanded means, stating that she qualified by winning the 2023 Oceania Breaking Championships and hadn’t known any of the nine judges.
The breakdancing community has been criticized for its lack of diversity and representation, with many arguing that the Olympic event has contributed to the gentrification of the subculture. Raygun touched on this issue, but focused on her ethnicity rather than socioeconomic or academic concerns.
Despite the backlash, Raygun remains committed to her craft and is looking forward to continuing to breakdance. However, she has announced that she won’t be competing in any upcoming events, citing the stress and pressure that comes with competing at the highest level.
The reaction to Raygun’s interview has been largely negative, with many commenters lambasting her for refusing to own up to her performance. However, Raygun remains defiant, insisting that she is proud of her accomplishments and will continue to represent Australia in the breakdancing community.
As the breakdancing community continues to evolve and grow, it remains to be seen how Raygun’s performance will be remembered. One thing is certain, however: her Olympic debut has sparked a global conversation about the sport and its place in the world of competitive dance.
