Nigerians Feel the Pinch of Rising Petrol Prices
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has sounded the alarm, warning the Nigerian government not to take its citizens for granted. The forum’s President-General, Yerima Shettima, expressed deep concerns over the recent astronomical increase in the price of petrol, also known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Shettima believes that the government has lost touch with the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, who are struggling to make ends meet. He pointed out that the price of foodstuffs has skyrocketed, making it impossible for many families to survive. The increase in the minimum wage to N70,000, he argued, is nothing but a deceit, as it cannot meet the needs of even a single person, let alone a family.
The President-General urged the government to rethink its approach to tackling the numerous challenges facing the country. He warned that if the situation continues, angry and hungry Nigerians may be pushed to the wall, leading to unforeseeable consequences.
Shettima called on the government to leave up to its responsibilities and ensure that Nigerians feel the positive impact of the "renewed hope agenda." He emphasized the need for the government to make life and living better for the people, rather than making promises that are not kept.
The sudden increase in petrol prices has already created a multiplier effect on other essential items, including transportation. Shettima appealed to the government to take urgent action to avoid revolt from Nigerians.
The AYCF’s cautionary message serves as a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation and the need for the government to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of its people.
