PDP Crisis: Senators Dino Melaye and Rabiu Kwankwaso Clash Over Party’s Fate
In a recent social media post, former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani revealed that his colleagues, Senators Dino Melaye and Rabiu Kwankwaso, have differing opinions on the crisis plaguing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). While Melaye believes the party was "murdered," Kwankwaso thinks it died a natural death and has declared himself the "messiah" to save it.
Sani’s post on Sunday highlighted the stark contrast between the two senators’ views. According to him, Kwankwaso’s comment attracted more angry reactions than Melaye’s, leading him to suggest that a "coroner is needed" to investigate the party’s demise.
Kwankwaso, who ran as the presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, claimed that the PDP is already dead. In a statement, he said, "I wish to remind you that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is already dead, because we were in the party, since they have gone out of the line, we decided to check out."
On the other hand, Melaye, a chieftain of the PDP, has been vocal about the party’s crisis, blaming the acting chairman, Umar Damagun, and others for its destruction. In a recent social media post, he wrote, "End of the road for PDP as Damagun, Bature and Anyanwu irredeemably destroyed the party. We will talk about the commercialisation and privatisation of PDP. PDP is now once upon a time."
The PDP has been plagued by internal conflicts and leadership crises, leading to its decline in popularity and influence. With the 2027 presidential election on the horizon, it remains to be seen how the party will recover and whether Kwankwaso’s prediction of winning the election will come true.
