Nakuru Girls High School Foils Arson Attempt

Arson Attempt at Nakuru Girls High School Sparks Police Investigation

In a shocking incident, Nakuru Girls High School in Kenya has been placed under 24-hour police surveillance after an arson attempt was made on Sunday night. According to a letter sent to parents by the school’s principal, Rose Mejo, unknown individuals doused a heap of bedsheets with a strongly smelling chemical, attempting to torch them. Fortunately, the bedsheets did not catch fire.

The school administration reported the incident to the Teachers Estate Police Station, and police responded immediately, keeping vigil until morning. Mejo reassured parents that their children’s safety is a top priority and that the police are investigating those involved in the motive.

This incident comes just two days after a devastating fire at Endarasha Hillside Academy, which left 21 pupils dead and over 60 others missing. The recent spate of fires and cases of indiscipline among secondary schools in Kenya have been linked to the ongoing nationwide strike by teachers under the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

The strike, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has led to reports of idleness and indiscipline among students. Several boarding secondary schools in Nakuru, including Jomo Kenyatta Boys High School, have sent their learners home due to the unrest. Day schools have also reported low student turnout since schools reopened for the third term on August 26, with many learners choosing to stay away.

The situation is a cause for concern, and authorities are working to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff at Nakuru Girls High School and other affected institutions.
