Academic Staff Union Rallies in Support of Dismissed Lecturers
In a bold show of solidarity, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Lagos Zone will today, Tuesday, hold a rally in support of five dismissed lecturers from the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo. According to a letter of invitation made available to PUNCH Online on Monday, the lecturers were illegally dismissed by LASU administration.
The letter, written in a tone of condemnation, accuses the university administration of being "inept, inglorious and vindictive." It invites supporters to join the "National Day of Solidarity Rally" to stand with the five affected lecturers, who include Isaac Oyewumi, the union’s chairman, Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu, vice chairman, Dr. Tony Dansu, secretary, Adeolu Oluwaseyi Oyekan, assistant secretary, and Oluwakemi Aboderin-Shonibare, treasurer.
The dismissed lecturers were fired in 2019 by the university management, citing "unauthorised removal, retention, distribution, or publication of official confidential documents" as the reason for their dismissal. However, previous reports have revealed that the affected lecturers have denied the allegations, contesting their termination.
The rally is scheduled to commence by 10 am, as ASUU Lagos Zone expresses its strongest support for its members who have been wrongly treated. The event serves as a testament to the union’s commitment to upholding the rights and interests of its members and to ensuring fair treatment in all academic and professional settings.
