Former Governor Oshiomhole Seeks Forgiveness from Esama of Benin
In a rare display of humility, Adams Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, publicly sought forgiveness from Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin, for any past wrongs during his tenure as governor. The gesture was made during a goodwill message at a banquet celebrating Igbinedion’s 90th birthday in Benin on Saturday.
Oshiomhole praised Igbinedion’s contributions to society, describing him as a good father who had brought people together from all parts of the country, regardless of their political or religious affiliations. He acknowledged the crucial support he received from Igbinedion during his political career, stating that without it, he might not have become the governor of Edo State.
The former governor also expressed gratitude for the advice and guidance Igbinedion provided him over the years, both known and unknown. As a Catholic, Oshiomhole confessed that he might have done some things he shouldn’t have done as governor and asked for Igbinedion’s forgiveness for any actions that may have irritated him.
Comparing Igbinedion’s vast influence and large number of supporters to a parent with many children, Oshiomhole noted that it’s inevitable that some children will cause frustration. He reflected on parenthood, saying that the only way to avoid children doing things you don’t like is not to have any, but with as many children as God has blessed you with, some are bound to irritate you.
Oshiomhole concluded by asking for Igbinedion’s forgiveness and praying that he would grant it. He also lauded the Esama’s visionary leadership in establishing Nigeria’s first private university and other ventures that had brought the country international recognition.
The gesture was seen as a significant step towards reconciliation and a display of Oshiomhole’s willingness to make amends for any past wrongs.
