Raphael Varane, the French football defender, has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 31. The news comes just months after he signed a two-year contract with Italian club Como, but a knee injury sustained during his only appearance with the team has forced him to hang up his boots.
Varane, who has had an illustrious career with Real Madrid and the French national team, made the announcement on social media, stating that he was retiring with “immense pride”. He reflected on his career, saying that he had taken on many challenges and risen to the occasion every time, often when it seemed impossible.
Despite his retirement, Varane has confirmed that he will remain at Como in a non-playing role. The defender’s career has been marked by numerous accolades, including 18 trophies with Real Madrid and victories in the World Cup and Nations League with France.
Varane joined Real Madrid in 2011 after a stint with French side Lens, and went on to make over 300 appearances for the Spanish club. He also spent time at Old Trafford with Manchester United, making over 90 appearances in all competitions.
Throughout his career, Varane has been known for his defensive prowess and leadership skills, earning him a reputation as one of the world’s top defenders. His retirement is a significant blow to the football world, but he will undoubtedly be remembered for his impressive achievements on the pitch.
