Thunderstorms Forecast for Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has issued a warning for thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday. The agency’s weather outlook released on Sunday predicts localized thunderstorms in various parts of the country.

According to NiMet, the northern region is expected to experience localized thunderstorms during the morning hours on Monday, with parts of Kebbi and Zamfara States being most affected. In the afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Zamfara, Kaduna, Bauchi, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States.

In the North Central region, localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of the Niger and Kwara States during the morning hours, while in the southern cities, localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Ondo States during the morning hours.

On Tuesday, morning localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa States in the northern region. In the afternoon and evening hours, thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Borno, and Gombe States.

On Wednesday, morning localized thunderstorms are expected over parts of Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kebbi States in the northern region. The agency also forecast localized thunderstorms over parts of Plateau and Nasarawa States during the morning hours.

NiMet urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas as there could be a high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours and strong winds might precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. The public is advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet and adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.

The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
