Wu-Tang Clan Founder RZA’s Hidden Talent Revealed in “A Ballet Through Mud”
In an unexpected turn of events, RZA, the 55-year-old founder of the iconic Wu-Tang Clan, has released a traditional classical album, “A Ballet Through Mud”, inspired by his hoarding habit and nostalgia for his teenage years. The album is a beautiful blend of classical music and storytelling raps, a genre that RZA once deemed too “immature” for his early rap group.
Early in the pandemic, RZA began rummaging through old spiral notebooks in his library, unearthing a blue Mead notebook filled with rhymes, phone numbers, and movie ideas from his teenage years growing up in Staten Island. As he flipped through the pages, a series of storytelling raps stood out, including one about six friends, “Joe Is A Nerd”. The notebook became the catalyst for his new project, which he began crafting melodies for, noodling along on the keyboard to match the emotions of his teenage rhyme-stories.
RZA’s wife weighed in on the project, suggesting he abandon vocals and focus on the music itself. After watching a documentary about Alvin Ailey on a flight, he sought out dancers to visualize his imagined narrative and eventually collaborated with the Colorado Symphony for two performances in February 2023.
In an interview with The Associated Press, RZA discussed the nostalgic genesis of the project, the growing bridge between classical and hip-hop, and his hopes for what comes next with his composition and ballet. When asked about the significance of his latest endeavor, RZA replied, “I’m exploring new territory, and it’s a way to show that hip-hop is not just limited to rap music.”
With “A Ballet Through Mud”, RZA is bridging the gap between two seemingly disparate genres, paving the way for future collaborations and artistic explorations. As his fans eagerly await what’s next, one thing is certain – RZA’s creative genius knows no bounds.
