Sokoto State Government Constructs Military Base to Combat Banditry and Criminality

The Sokoto State Government has announced the construction of a military base in Illela town to support military operations in the fight against banditry and other forms of criminality in the state. According to Dr. Bashir Achida, Economic Adviser to the state governor, the move is part of the government’s efforts to address the security challenge in the northwest and country at large.

The military base, which is currently under construction, will be handed over to the Federal Government once completed, in line with constitutional provisions that place the military under the Exclusive list. Achida emphasized that the renewed support is necessary to secure the life and properties of citizens and the strategic position of the state in agriculture and the nation’s economic development.

Sokoto State is a major agrarian area with an international boundary, making it vulnerable to the activities of bandits and anti-social elements. To combat this, the state government has provided 140 operational vehicles to support security agencies in the state, as well as constructing major roads to make rural communities accessible to the military.

The state government has also set up community guards, which have been provided with 700 motorcycles and 40 Hilus vehicles to complement the efforts of the military and other security agencies in combating banditry and other criminal activities in the state.

Achida highlighted that a secure environment would enable Sokoto State to contribute more to the nation’s efforts to fight poverty and food shortage. The state’s strategic location and agricultural potential make it a crucial player in the country’s economic development.

The construction of the military base is a significant step towards enhancing security in Sokoto State and the surrounding region. With the support of the state government and the military, the people of Sokoto can look forward to a safer and more secure environment.
