Kenya’s Deputy President Impeachment Motion Sparks Tensions as Supporters and Opponents Clash

In Kenya, supporters and opponents of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua clashed in public forums, sparking concerns about the legitimacy of an impeachment motion filed against him in parliament this week. The motion accuses Gachagua of backing anti-government protests in June and engaging in corruption and other irregularities, claims he strongly denies.

As part of the public consultation process, Kenyans were given until Friday to submit their opinions on the impeachment motion, which was proposed by the ruling alliance on Tuesday. Public forums were held across the country to discuss the motion, with attendees showing strong emotions on both sides.

The situation turned violent in the capital, Nairobi, as supporters of President William Ruto clashed with those supporting Gachagua at a public forum held at the Bomas of Kenya. Activist Morara Kebaso, known for exposing stalled government projects, claimed he was injured in the chaos. In Nyandarua county, opponents of Gachagua were branded “traitors” and chased out of a community hall.

Despite the tensions, the Senate is expected to hear the impeachment motion on Tuesday next week, further escalating the political crisis in Kenya. The motion has sparked debate about the deputy president’s role in the government and the accountability of public officials.

With public opinion deeply divided, it remains to be seen whether the Senate will vote in favor of the impeachment motion or clear Gachagua of any wrongdoing. One thing is certain, however: the controversy has raised concerns about the stability of Kenya’s government and the future of its leaders.
