Rivers State Sets Up Judicial Inquiry into Arson, Killings

Rivers State Government Establishes Judicial Commission to Investigate Arson and Violence

The Rivers State Government has taken a decisive step in addressing the recent spate of arson and violence that rocked the state on Monday. In a move to ensure justice is served, the government has set up a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the incidents and identify those responsible.

The commission was established after three local government council secretariats – Ikwerre, Eleme, and Emohua – were set ablaze following the withdrawal of police officers securing the 23 council secretariats by the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. The governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has vowed to take decisive action against those responsible for the destruction.

According to a statement by the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, the judicial commission was set up in accordance with Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999. The governor has approved the commission’s establishment, and its members will be sworn in later today at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.

The members of the commission include Hon. Justice I.R. Minakiri as Chairman, Barr. Felicia Nwoke, Prof. Blessing Didia, Sir Samuel Egbe, Venerable Alex Usifor, Barr. Uzor Ikenga as Counsel to the Commission, and Mrs. Inyingi Brown as Secretary.

The commission’s establishment is a significant step in the state’s efforts to address the recent violence and restore peace to the affected areas. The governor’s pledge to collaborate with security agencies to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable is a reassuring move that the government is committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

The investigation will provide an opportunity for the commission to gather evidence and hear testimony from witnesses, which will help to establish the facts surrounding the incidents. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the actions that need to be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the commission begins its work, the people of Rivers State can be assured that their government is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served.
