PDP Appoints New Acting Chairman Amid Party Crisis

PDP Factions Announce New Acting National Chairman Despite Court Injunction

A faction of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has chosen Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as its new Acting National Chairman, despite the ongoing party crisis. This decision comes after the faction suspended acting national chairman, Amb. Illiya Damagum, and in defiance of a court injunction obtained by the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) to prevent Damagum’s removal.

According to a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the National Working Committee (NWC) has approved Mohammed’s appointment, which takes immediate effect. The move is in line with the party’s Constitution, as amended in 2017.

The development is a significant event in the ongoing crisis within the ruling party, and the NWC has called on all party organs, leaders, stakeholders, and members to remain focused and committed to the party’s pursuit of power. The NWC is gearing up for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24, 2024, to address the ongoing challenges and chart a new course for the party.

The court injunction, which restrained the NEC and BoT from removing Damagum, has not deterred the PDP faction from pushing forward with the new appointments. Mohammed, the new Acting National Chairman, will be tasked with steering the party through these challenging times and ensure its continued relevance in Nigerian politics.

This development has significant implications for the country’s political landscape, with analysts monitoring the situation closely to see how it will unfold and what impact it will have on the nation’s governance. As the party’s internal crisis deepens, the nation waits with bated breath to see if the PDP will be able to overcome its internal divisions and emerge stronger, or if it will continue to be hamstrung by intraparty conflicts and court battles.
