Akpatu Abandons Gubernatorial Poll Challenge

Labour Party Gubernatorial Candidate Abandons Election Challenge, Aims for Systemic Changes in Edo State

In a surprising move, Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the recent Edo State gubernatorial election, has announced that he will not challenge the results of the contest at the tribunal. Despite finishing third with 22,763 votes, Akpata cited irregularities and electoral malpractice in the exercise, but chose to redirect his efforts towards systemic changes in the state’s democracy.

Akpata’s decision not to contest the election results at the tribunal is not an indication of compromise, but rather a strategic move aimed at redirecting his energies towards promoting reforms in the electoral process. He believes that the moment calls for a paradigm shift in the way elections are conducted in Edo State, where manipulation and disenfranchisement are common occurrences.

“A system that incentivises manipulation and disenfranchisement is no longer sustainable,” Akpata said in a statement. “We need to work towards a better future for our democracy, where the voices of the people are truly represented.”

Akpata’s decision comes three weeks after the election, which saw him trail behind Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 291,667 votes, and Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 247,274 votes.

While some have interpreted his decision as a signs of defeat, Akpata’s move is seen by many as a bold step towards creating lasting change in Edo State’s political landscape. Only time will tell if his efforts will bear fruit, but one thing is certain – the path to reform is a long and arduous one, and Akpata’s commitment to change is a crucial step in the right direction.
