Anambra’s Insecurity Woes: Governorship Aspirant Condemns Kidnap of Sports Journalists

Security Concerns in Anambra State: Governorship Aspirant Calls for Stronger Measures

In the wake of a recent kidnap of sports journalists from SuperSports, a governorship aspirant for the 2025 election in Anambra State, Mr Paul Chukwuma, has spoken out against the level of insecurity in the state. The journalists were traveling to Uyo from Lagos State to cover the Super Eagles African qualifier match with their Libyan counterparts when they were kidnapped. Although they were later rescued by security agencies, some of them died, and one more remains unaccounted for.

In a statement released through his spokesperson, Mr James Eze, Chukwuma condemned the attack, extending his condolences to the families of the deceased, the Nigeria Football Federation, and SuperSport, as well as the Nigerian Army, which reportedly suffered casualties in the rescue operation. He also acknowledged the courageous response of the Nigerian Army during the rescue attempt.

Chukwuma emphasized that the incident has highlighted the urgent need for stronger security measures across the state, stating, “This attack has not only placed Anambra in an unfavourable light but has revealed the urgent need for stronger security measures across our state.” He added, “Our thoughts go to the Nigerian Army, whose courageous response during the rescue attempt is deeply appreciated. We mourn with the families of the deceased and stand in solidarity with all who are grieving.”

Chukwuma also emphasized that the people of Anambra deserve safety and security, urging the government to take concrete steps to protect lives and restore peace to the communities. As the state prepares for the 2025 election, Chukwuma’s call to action serves as a reminder of the need for effective security measures to ensure a peaceful and secure environment for all.
