Akande Faults Tinubu, Shettima’s Simultaneous Foreign Trips

Nigeria’s President and Vice President’s Simultaneous Foreign Trips Raise Concerns

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, Laolu Akande, a former presidential spokesman, expressed his concerns about President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima’s simultaneous foreign trips. According to Akande, it is not ideal for both leaders to be away from the country at the same time, as the work of governance requires constant attention and hand-holding.

Akande’s comments come as President Tinubu departed Nigeria on October 2, 2024, for a two-week work leave in the United Kingdom, while Vice President Shettima left Abuja on Wednesday for a two-day visit to Sweden. The Vice President’s trip aims to represent Nigeria in bilateral engagements with the Scandinavian nation.

In response to concerns about the simultaneous absences, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga released a statement assuring that the two leaders are fully engaged with the nation’s affairs, even while they are away. Onanuga also stated that there is no vacuum in governance.

However, Akande’s concerns stem from his experience during his eight-year tenure, where he witnessed the importance of having at least one of the leaders present in the country. He recalled an instance where the President and Vice President had to coordinate their trips to ensure that one of them was always available to attend to national matters. Akande emphasized that this arrangement was crucial in maintaining trust and stability in the relationship between the President and Vice President.

Akande’s comments highlight the importance of effective governance and leadership presence in Nigeria. As the country navigates various challenges, the need for consistent and coordinated leadership becomes increasingly crucial. The simultaneous foreign trips of the President and Vice President have raised questions about the country’s leadership strategy and the potential implications for governance.

In light of Akande’s concerns, it remains to be seen how the current administration will address the challenges of simultaneous foreign trips and ensure that the country’s governance remains unaffected.
