A group of 30 retired permanent secretaries from Abia State has raised alarm over the non-payment of their severance entitlements and gratuities since their retirement in October 2023. In a heartfelt appeal to the state government, the retirees are urging immediate action to address their financial struggles amidst the ongoing economic challenges in the country.

Speaking at a press conference in Umuahia, the retirees expressed their frustration at the lack of support following what they describe as a premature retirement. Their spokesperson, Nkwachukwu Agomo, highlighted that many of them were still entitled to several years of service before being unexpectedly removed from their positions by the current administration.

Despite Governor Alex Otti’s earlier instructions to resolve the issue, the group claims they have yet to receive their severance packages. Agomo pointed out that their abrupt removal has not only left them without livelihoods but has also cast a shadow on their professional reputations.

“We dedicated decades to serving the public in this state, and our sudden retirement has stripped us of our livelihoods and placed a stigma on our careers,” Agomo lamented. “This has left us grappling with uncertainties about our future.”

The retirees emphasized that they are currently only receiving pensions, which are insufficient to support their families and dependents during these tough economic times. “We are suffering, and we urge the government to prioritize the payment of our entitlements,” they said.

As these former civil servants continue to seek justice, their plight sheds light on the broader issues of retirement benefits and support for public servants in Nigeria.
