The Nigerian national grid has collapsed, plunging the country into widespread power outages for the second time in a week and marking the tenth collapse of 2024. The failure, which occurred at approximately 11:28 a.m. on Thursday, has left the entire grid producing no electricity as of midday.
Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), a branch of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), revealed that while power plants connected to the grid generated an average of 2,323 megawatts around 11 a.m., this output dropped to 0.00 MW by 12 p.m.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria has not yet provided an official explanation for this latest collapse.
In a statement, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the outage, attributing the widespread blackout to a total loss of power supply from the national grid. “The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this morning at about 11:28 hours,” the company said, assuring customers that efforts are underway to restore normal service as soon as possible.
