President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) praised Mrs. Olubisi Osinbajo, mother of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, as she turned 90 on Thursday. In a personally signed letter dated Wednesday, Buhari thanked the celebrant for giving the country an “illustrious offspring” in the Vice President and his siblings. The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed the tribute in a statement titled “President Buhari celebrates Mama Olubisi Osinbajo at 90.”
Born on 16 February 1933, Mrs. Osinbajo taught at the girls’ college in Sagamu in the early 1950s. She married in 1954 and is the mother of five children: Femi Osinbajo (born 29 July 1955), Yemi Osinbajo (born 8 March 1957), Akin Osinbajo (born 1960), Tunde Osinbajo (born 1962) and Tolu Osinbajo (born 1970).
In his birthday message, President Buhari wrote: “It gives me immense pleasure to felicitate our dear Mama Olubisi Osinbajo as she turns 90, entering the rare ranks of a nonagenarian. It is nothing but the sheer grace of God that spares a person to live up to 90, and we are thankful to Almighty God that Mama has not only reached the milestone but is doing so in sound mind, good health, surrounded by accomplished offspring and doting family members. On behalf of myself, my family, and Nigerians, we rejoice with Mama and wish her continued grace and joy in the Lord all the days of her life. Amen.”
The President also expressed admiration for the Olubisi Osinbajo Foundation, which she established to support widows and the families of clergymen. “It is an initiative I recommend to other endowed people in our society, as it has lofty rewards not only here but also in the hereafter,” he said. “Thank you, Mama, for giving Nigeria the gift of your son, our Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, and his other illustrious siblings. Please accept my hearty congratulations. Happy 90th birthday anniversary.”
