AFCON: Benin captain, Mounie reveals reason for draw with Super Eagles

Cheetahs of Benin Republic captain, Steve Mounie, says the team’s failure to convert their chances contributed to the stalemate against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Gernot Rohr’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by the Super Eagles in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matchday five encounter in Abidjan on Thursday night.

Centre-back Mohammed Tijani gave the Cheetahs the lead in the 16th minute.

The hosts created numerous chances afterwards but were let down by poor finishing.

Victor Osimhen equalised for the Super Eagles eight minutes from time.

“It is not a bad result in itself. Now we will have to go and play this final in Libya. It is certain that at 1-0, we would have hoped to win this match. We had very clear chances to kill the match,” Mounie said after the game.

“When you play against Nigeria and you do not kill the match, that is how it is.”
