Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has publicly declared that Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele is unfit for his position. Akeredolu expressed disappointment that President Muhammadu Buhari did not dismiss Emefiele after the central bank chief allegedly entered the presidential race. He warned that a failed presidential aspirant would seek to frustrate the electoral process and urged Buhari to order the CBN to reverse its controversial new naira design policy.
Speaking on Tuesday evening to members of the Youth Directorate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, led by Seyi Tinubu, the son of APC presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Akeredolu condemned the CBN’s alleged defiance of a Supreme Court order requiring both new and old notes to circulate simultaneously. “We are facing a serious problem,” he said. “Our rating as a party is not favourable, and we cannot afford to implement this financial policy now. There is fuel shortage, naira scarcity, and other challenges. This policy is ill‑timed and should be reversed. The old and new notes must coexist.”
He added that okadas, taxis, and banks have stopped accepting old notes despite an injunction, and that everyone is ignoring the court order. “We have said that this man should be removed when he contested for the presidency. He is not fit for the role. A man who attempted to be President will frustrate us at this time,” Akeredolu asserted.
The governor praised the party’s youth for their relentless efforts, noting that they will determine the outcome of next week’s presidential election. “Your demographic shows you constitute a larger percentage of the electorate. You are the ones who will decide,” he said, reaffirming that Tinubu’s selection as the APC candidate was based on his competence and proven track record.
Earlier in the event, Seyi Tinubu thanked Governor Akeredolu for his commitment to youth development and inclusion. “We have come to seek your approval to build on what you have already achieved in the state in terms of campaigning. We will be in Ondo for the next two days to meet with the youth. Thank you for all you have done for Ondo and Nigeria, especially for young Nigerians. With your work, Asiwaju has no worries in Ondo State,” he said.
