Over 115 patients will benefit from subsidised surgery at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) as part of the celebrations marking the institution’s 50th anniversary.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki, announced on Tuesday that the patients have been registered and screened. He explained that the surgeries are offered with a 50 percent subsidy to give back to society, noting that quality medical care is often unaffordable, especially for those not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.
Obaseki affirmed the hospital’s commitment to providing high‑quality healthcare for Nigerians. “In February, UBTH is offering a 50 percent subsidy on several high‑end minimally invasive procedures, such as endoscopic and laparoscopic surgeries, colonoscopy, and optical coherence tomography,” he said. “We hope this will greatly assist patients seeking care and demonstrate that, as a medical institution, we care for the community in which we operate.”
Some patients praised the initiative, describing it as uncommon and expressing joy at being beneficiaries of the subsidised surgeries. One patient, identified only as Lucky, shared his experience: after losing hope of accessing affordable care elsewhere, he was grateful to receive the subsidised surgery. “I consider myself fortunate to have benefited from this programme. I have sought treatment at various hospitals before this opportunity arose, and I commend the hospital for this gesture,” he said.
