Christmas: Strengthen agric sector, reduce food prices – CAN to govt

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on government to strengthen the agricultural sector, reduce food prices, and address inequality

CAN also urged Nigerians to look to Jesus for hope and a better country.

In a statement by the National President of the apex Christian body, Archbishop Daniel Okoh,
CAN urged Christians to reflect on Christ’s values and teachings, which provide hope, peace and guidance, especially during challenging times.

CAN noted that this Christmas comes with a mix of joy and sorrow for many Nigerians with the recent stampedes at charity events in Abuja and Anambra, where innocent lives were lost.

Media Talk Africa reports that about 10 dead bodies were recovered after the incident in Abuja, according to the Police. Several persons were also hospitalized.

A similar incident occured in Anambra State where not less than 20 residents of the Okija community died in a stampede that occurred during an event organized for the distribution of rice.

It was also reported that over 35 people, mostly children, died during a stampede at a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, a few days ago.

“These ugly incidents have left us grieving as a nation. These heartbreaking incidents highlight the growing desperation among our people and the erosion of societal values such as patience, orderliness, and respect for one another.

“For those grieving or injured, I urge you to find strength in the love of Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate.

“These incidents also highlight the urgent need for our government to prioritise food security. The desperation we witnessed reflects the harsh realities many Nigerians face daily.

“Our leaders must remain resolute in the fight against hunger and take decisive steps to ensure that no Nigerian is left hungry or in need.

“Strengthening the agricultural sector, reducing food prices, and addressing inequality must be at the forefront of governance,” the statement added.
