No going back on Lagos council polls – APC Chairman

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has announced that the state will hold local government elections in 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas, LCDAs.

This clarification comes in light of the Supreme Court judgment that granted autonomy to local governments.

Media Talk Africa reports that in Lagos State, there has been some confusion regarding the establishment of the 37 LCDAs, which were created from the existing 20 LGs.

Since these LCDAs are not recognized in the constitution, there has been speculation about whether the state would continue to conduct elections for the 37 LCDAs.

However, the APC chairman in Lagos state Cornelius Ojelabi, described the suggestions that the polls might fail in 57 councils as misleading distractions.

He said, “We wish to inform all and sundry that the Local Government elections will hold across the state in the 20 Local Government Councils and the 37 Local Council Development Areas in the year 2025.

“Our position as a progressive party is that we cannot discountenance the contributions of the LCDAs to the overall political and socio-economic development of the state.

“We hope this release will put paid to further speculations as regards the local government elections in order not to unnecessarily heat up the polity”, he added.
