Former Chelsea star Chris Sutton believes that the club will sell Christopher Nkunku before the January transfer window closes. Sutton suggests that Nkunku’s departure from Stamford Bridge is likely due to manager Enzo Maresca’s apparent reluctance to utilize him. The France international currently finds himself low on the list of Maresca’s preferred strikers.
Nkunku made a £52 million move to Chelsea from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023, following an impressive stint in the Bundesliga. However, his first season at Chelsea has been marred by injury issues, limiting him to just 14 appearances across all competitions. Despite returning to full fitness this season, the 27-year-old has continued to face challenges in securing game time under Maresca.
“I can see Christopher Nkunku leaving,” Sutton told NewBettingSites. He noted that Maresca seems hesitant to use his bench, resulting in Nkunku not receiving enough regular playing time. Sutton further emphasized that Nkunku’s position in the pecking order indicates that Maresca views him as merely adequate, stating, “You need more than OK if you want to push for the Premier League title.”
