A political analyst, Jide Ojo, has characterized the impeachment of Mudahiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, as a self-inflicted own goal. Ojo made this statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. He suggested that the former Speaker’s disparaging remarks directed at Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu may have contributed to his downfall.
According to Media Talk Africa, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Obasa, citing multiple statutory and financial infractions. Following his impeachment, Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1 and previously served as the chief whip of the house. Additionally, the House elected Mojeed Fatai as the new Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Ojo elaborated on the situation, noting that social media commentary indicated Obasa’s disrespect towards Governor Sanwo-Olu, particularly during the budget presentation. He recalled a specific remark made by Obasa, in which he asserted that he was not too young or inexperienced to be governor and claimed to be more qualified than some current officeholders. This comment was perceived as a slight against the sitting governor.
Ojo emphasized that as Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, one does not enjoy immunity and serves at the discretion of their colleagues. He expressed uncertainty regarding the motivations behind Obasa’s behavior, particularly in light of allegations that he kept the governor and party elders waiting for several hours without offering an apology. Ojo remarked that such actions, combined with a perceived stubbornness, could lead to dire consequences. He concluded by reiterating his belief that this situation may indeed represent a self-inflicted own goal for Obasa.
