Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has defended the impeachment of the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, asserting the necessity of holding him accountable for his actions. Oki made these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, coinciding with the news of Obasa’s impeachment.

According to Media Talk Africa, Obasa, a sixth-term APC lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, was impeached by the Lagos State House of Assembly on allegations of fraud. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda was elected as the new deputy speaker to lead the house.

Oki characterized Obasa’s impeachment as predictable, accusing him of behaving like an emperor. He noted that recent events had indicated a need for a change in the leadership of the Lagos parliament. “He saw himself as an emperor. It became very obvious that there was a need for a change in the leadership of the parliament in Lagos,” Oki stated. He further reflected on the past 18 months, suggesting that the signs of Obasa’s impending removal had been evident. He recalled the day when the governor presented the 2025 appropriation bill and the leadership of the party was invited to the convention, emphasizing that these events foreshadowed the current situation.
