Popular Nollywood actress Stella Damasus has revealed that her family’s original surname was Ojukwu before the Nigerian Civil War. She made this disclosure during an interview with prominent media personality Ebuka Obi Uchendu.

In the interview, Stella addressed the common misconception surrounding her surname, ‘Damasus.’ She explained that her grandfather’s name, Ojukwu, was changed during the civil war to protect the family from potential attacks. The name change was prompted by the assumption that her family was connected to the late Biafran war general, Ojukwu.

Ebuka noted the surprise many people expressed upon learning that her surname was not originally Damasus. He asked Stella if she was as shocked as the audience. In her response, Stella clarified, “Damasus is my granddaughter’s first name. It’s a Greek name. My original surname was Ojukwu, but that changed during the Biafran war when my people were attacked in Asaba because they thought it was the same Ojukwu. I was born into Damasus, and when I asked why, that was the reason they gave me.”
