Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, has announced that the Federal Government has begun receiving the 2,000 tractors ordered from Belarus. This initiative is part of the government’s strategy to reduce food commodity prices in the country by implementing new measures that aim to make farming more efficient.
Kyari noted that food prices have started to decline, attributing this trend to favorable rainfall, a bumper harvest, and effective government policies. He highlighted the success of the 2024 farming season, during which farmers nationwide recorded high yields. To maintain this positive trajectory, the government is focusing on supporting wheat farming in highland areas, such as Taraba State, and providing modern farming tools to farmers.
The minister explained that the 2,000 tractors and other agricultural equipment are arriving in the country in batches. He also mentioned the introduction of cutting-edge technology, including the use of drones, in the upcoming farming season to enhance food production. The government plans to increase tomato farming in the South-East and South-West regions, with harvests anticipated by May.
For the dry season, the government aims to cultivate an additional 400,000 hectares of farmland, while improving fertilizer supplies to help farmers increase their output. Kyari emphasized the government’s commitment to providing farmers with the necessary resources to produce more food and alleviate the cost of living.
Furthermore, the minister revealed that Nigeria’s agriculture sector is becoming stronger and is expected to continue improving through 2025. He noted that development partners are increasingly confident in Nigeria’s agricultural potential. With enhanced farming practices, better tools, and increased production, Nigeria is positioning itself as a more significant player in agriculture, attracting greater support and partnerships from global organizations. Kyari reiterated that the government will continue to build on this momentum to further strengthen the sector and enhance food security in the country.
