With a week left before the presidential election, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) announced on Friday that it would dissolve its entire structure to support the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. The party’s national chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, made the disclosure at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday night. He explained that the decision followed a National Executive Committee meeting that addressed crucial national issues, particularly the upcoming election.
The adoption of Atiku means the APM will no longer back its own presidential aspirant, Princess Chichi Ojei, a prominent Delta‑state‑born politician and the sole female candidate contesting the February 25 poll. Dantalle said the party arrived at its decision after evaluating the democratic credentials of Atiku and Okowa, concluding that their candidacy served the national interest.
Describing the former vice president as the best—and the only—candidate capable of rescuing Nigeria, Dantalle emphasized the need for a competent, experienced, visionary, resourceful, and dynamic leader to address the country’s multifaceted challenges and chart a new course for the next four years. He added, “The APM has confidence in the leadership of Atiku‑Okowa and will collapse its structures nationwide to campaign for their presidential ticket.”
Despite withdrawing from the presidential race, the APM will still contest other elective positions, including Senate, House of Representatives, governorship, and State House of Assembly seats. “APM has presented credible candidates for these positions and is confident of victory in governorship and legislative seats,” Dantalle asserted.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to vote en masse for the PDP’s presidential ticket, stating, “National interest supersedes partisan politics. We must join hands to rebuild our beloved nation and make Nigeria great again. The umbrella symbol of the party is big enough to accommodate fellow compatriots and turn around the destiny of the nation.”
