Kano censorship board bars popular musician Sojaboy, two others over alleged misconduct

The Kano State Censorship Board has imposed a ban on renowned Kannywood singer Usman Sojaboy, actresses Shamsiyya Muhammad and Hasina Suzan, effectively, prohibiting their participation in Kannywood activities within the state.

The action was taken after the release of a video described by the board as promoting behavior that contradicts Kano’s cultural and religious standards.
The footage reportedly led to significant backlash from the public and religious scholars in the state.

In a statement signed by Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the board’s Information Officer, it was disclosed that Sojaboy had previously been warned multiple times regarding the use of “inappropriate and offensive content,” in his works.

The Executive Secretary of the censorship board, Abba El-Mustapha, instructed the board’s preview unit to ensure the ban is strictly enforced, emphasizing that the individuals must not feature in any Kannywood productions. Entertainment venues and theaters across Kano have also been directed to adhere to this directive.

The board further cautioned that it would take a firm stance against any form of indecency within the entertainment industry, reiterating that Sojaboy, along with the two actresses, is no longer recognized as part of the Kannywood community.
