Girl fatally shot by student in Tennessee high school cafeteria

A teenage girl has been shot dead in a high school in Tennessee, United States, by an armed student, who then turned the weapon on himself, the police said.

The attacker was said to have argued with the victim, 16-year-old Josselin Escalante, in the cafeteria before shooting her with a pistol, authorities stated. The armed student, known as Solomon Henderson, 17, then took his own life.

An unnamed third victim, a male student, suffered a “graze wound to the arm” and was released after treatment, police said.

The Metro Nashville Police Department told reporters that the shooting in the Nashville area is currently under investigation.

Police narrated that the first emergency call reporting gunfire at Antioch High School came in at 11:11 am local time (17:11 GMT) on Wednesday.

Local TV news showed tearful parents hugging their children at a reunification site away from the campus.

According to a database kept by Education Week, this would be the first US school shooting of the year, and the first such incident under the new Trump administration.

The White House said in a statement: “As details unfold, the White House offers its heartfelt thoughts and prayers to those impacted by this senseless tragedy.”
