Kano re-certifies over 2,000 certificates of occupancy, fixes deadline

The Kano State Ministry of Lands and Physical Planning has announced the re-certification of over 2,000 Certificates of Occupancy (CofOs) under its Titled Documents Re-certification Programme.

The Commissioner for Lands and Physical Planning, Alhaji AbdulJabbar Umar, disclosed this during a press briefing in Kano on Friday.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially launched the recertification of titled documents in Kano State on November 25, 2024. Since then, we have successfully re-certified more than 2,000 CofOs, with the process ongoing,” Umar stated.

He added that the ministry had also initiated the processing of Systematic Land Title Registration (SLTR) documents to issue regular CofOs.

According to the commissioner, the ministry has received over one million interactions related to the re-certification process since December 18. These interactions include applications for conversion, name changes, and actual re-certification requests.

Umar emphasized that the January 31, 2025, deadline for re-certification remains firm and urged property owners to act promptly.

“We strongly encourage everyone to re-certify their title documents or apply for new ones before January 31, 2025, to avoid complications,” he said.

He also highlighted the ministry’s efforts to introduce Sectional Titling in the state. “This initiative, set to commence soon, will simplify ownership processes for businesses operating in conglomerates, housing estates, plazas, blocks of flats, and markets. It will also boost the state’s internally generated revenue (IGR),” Umar noted.
