The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address the poor state of the Jalingo-Numan road or face mass protests.
NANS President, Mr Lucky Emonefe, made this declaration on Saturday, during the 3rd Inauguration Ceremony of the North East Zonal Executive Council of the union, held in Jalingo.
Emonefe described the Jalingo-Numan road as one of the worst in the country, calling it a “death trap” for students, particularly in the North East region.
He warned that if the Federal Government fails to act within the given timeline, NANS would relocate its national secretariat from Abuja to the North East in solidarity with affected students.
“The National Association of Nigerian Students has declared a state of emergency on the Jalingo-Numan road.The road is a death trap, especially for Nigerian students in the North-East.
We are giving the Federal Ministry of Works 14 days to ensure the contractor returns to the site. Failure to act will result in NANS relocating its secretariat to the North East.”Emonefe said.
He also commended the Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, for his student-friendly policies, highlighting the implementation of free education and a 50% reduction in tuition fees for tertiary institutions in the state.
The NANS president also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for introducing a student loan scheme under the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which according to him, has significantly benefited students.
Emonefe, also called on students spread across the nooks and crannies of the country to support the Tinubu administration for its success.
