FG presents N30m to family of late Nigerian flag designer, Akinkunmi

The Federal Government has fulfilled its promise to the family of Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the late designer of Nigeria’s national flag, by presenting a N30 million cheque more than a year after his passing.

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, delivered the cheque during a working visit to the Oyo State NOA Directorate in Ibadan.

During his visit to Pa Akinkunmi’s residence, Issa-Onilu described the late designer as a national legend, stating that Nigeria’s continued use of his iconic flag design underlines the nation’s deep respect for his legacy.

“This support is not a one-off gesture; the Federal Government remains committed to standing by the family,” he said.

The N30 million donation was part of a government pledge made during Akinkunmi’s burial. The NOA DG assured the family that future visits and support would continue.

As part of his Ibadan visit, Issa-Onilu also engaged with members of the Tanker Drivers Association at Tanker Park, Akinyele/Moniya, where he cautioned against reckless driving, fatigue-induced accidents, and fuel scooping.

“Scooping petrol is akin to stealing; it’s a death wish fraught with dangers,” he warned.

He announced that radio jingles in 70 local languages would soon be broadcast nationwide to further raise awareness on fuel scooping and road safety.

Issa-Onilu reiterated the agency’s dedication to promoting national values through the National Value Charter and National Identity Project.

He called on the media to amplify NOA’s awareness campaigns, ensuring vital safety and national unity messages reach all Nigerians.
